says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: I look over at you and nod my head, "Tal Ayelen." I'd wanted to contract you for another set of sheaths, but I was not sure if you were going to be available to do them, it seemed as though you were planning on a trip of some kind, but I could not tell that for sure.

says to |..Exavier of Minus..|: -I had already put away the list I had poured over, a list for my leather shop in Victoria; now I was mentally plotting revenge, for being left to wait one too many times, but you wouldn't know that; i was actually just sitting here enjoying a meal and contemplating a return to bed, as well, because I felt like death warmed over.-

says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: I lean forward in my seat, "Ayelen, I have need for two more scabbards, if you have the time and inclination for them. They are for a gift for someone, and so I would like to have your superior work, rather than just buying them from some random merchant, are you available to do such?"

says to |..Exavier of Minus..|: -I felt an involuntary flinch grip me when you leaned close; it was a reflex left over from a period of time that I had been doing my best to forget about. Then after a moment, I felt the tension ease away as I listened to you, giving a nod of my head from time to time.- "Same dimensions as the previous two?" -I asked outright; I had saved the wood pieces just in case, that would cut the time in creating the scabbards. I realized you had wanted those clothes for the slave girl, but life had grown a bit complicated for me for a time.-

-[sitting at the outdoor tables in the main square]-
says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: I see you flinch but do not pay too much attention to it, as I tended to have that effect on people from time to time. I consider your statement for a moment, "yes, the same dimensions would be excellent, it is for a alar short sword and a scaramasax but though they will be slightly different in construction they will be of the same length as the previous blades I had you make scabbards for." I say considering that, they would be heavier in construction, but with how supple the scabbards were that you made me the last time I was sure that they would accommodate the slightly thicker blades. "If you are agreeable we will do the same cost as the last set. You can either send me a messenger or meet me in the marketplace when they are complete."

says to |..Exavier of Minus..|: -I listened while you described the blades; I had seen the weaponry of the Alar a few times, the sacramasax as well, having known a fellow who preferred that particular sword. I thought about the weight of the leather, then shifted somewhat, taking a last sip of the wine that shimmered within the goblet.- "I could use a different leather, to accomodate a heavier blade, but will provide a suppleness as well, so it's not too stiff and unyielding." -If ... something happened, if I got myself in trouble, which "trouble" was my middle name, I would ensure that there would be a worker of my uncle's who could finish the project. Finally I nodded my head.- "Agreed..." -The extra coin would be helpful should I decide to pack things up and disappear; I would need all I could earn.- "If not here, I can leave word in Minus as well; I still have my room at the Inn there."

says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: I hear you speaking about the scabbards and I nod, "yes, I know that you are talented at your craft, and as I said since these are a gift I wanted them to be in a quality sheath, I certainly trust your judgement on what materials to use, if the cost will change due to the change in materials let me know. I will be back in Minus after my slave girl and I return there after the fair. So you can leave word for me at the Exeter Metal Works or on the town's bulletin board out in front of the Administrator's residence. Thank you for taking on the commission Ayelen." I smile, and then sit back, already thinking about what the blades were going to look like. I'd decided not to start making them though until I could secure the other components. I was hoping to find someone to make the pommels as well, but since there did not seem to be many people around that made that kind of stuff I would either have to buy them from a random merchant or make them myself. Either way I was sure I would find some way to finish this particular job with the quality that I wanted.

says to |..Exavier of Minus..|: -I offered a smile then and gave a nod of my head.- "I'll factor in the difference in material, but in all honesty, I don't see the cost increasing at all...." -I noted where to leave word of my finishing of the project and then spoke quietly.- "You're most welcome Exavier." -The work was a blessing, really, for it would keep me mostly out of trouble, at least until I was ready for trouble to enter my life once again.-
-I now dug into my wallet and took out the small journal, flipping it open to stroll a finger down the list; a thoughtful nod, because the supplies I'd needed were already items I had to pick up, or were already on their way to my workshop in Victoria. Good. I hated shopping, I thought, as my head rested to the cup of my palm offered, an arm bent on the low table beside me. Apparently, one of the slaves had moved in quietly and taken away the tray while I wasn't looking. This gave me reason to chuckle low and soft.-

says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: "excellent, I look forward to seeing the finished product Ayelen." I say with a grin, finishing my tankard of ale and sliding to my feet, "I have some other business to attend to, take care of yourself and I will see you again when you have the scabbards ready." I nod in your direction and then leave the tables.

-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: I head into the forge, having agreed to make the Spectacle a spatha and scramasax as a return gift for his gift to me of a slave. I had not had much opportunity lately to get into the forge and I'd felt bad that I did not have them ready yet. The specially made scabbards were in the works from a leather worker, but I needed to get to work on the blades and pommels. I found the perfect scramasax in a book that I had in my library, perfectly weighted, with more weight towards the tip because instead of a heavy pommel this one was made from carved temwood. It would still be just as strong and as easy to handle, but would lighten the pommel considerably. For the spatha I would go with more traditional materials as the 36" blade would certainly balance out the weapon. I would have a hand and a half grip on the spatha, so that it could be used in either hand. I head into the forge and rouse the two thralls that work here, telling them to get to work. I'd continued paying rent on this forge so that I could continue to use it.
(22:07:40 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: The two thralls get to work, as they know if they do not work in the way that I expect that they will face a lash from the whip. I start to lay out some tools that I'd brought with me. Luckily this forge had all the tools that I would need, but they did not have some of the equipment that I would want to use to make steel with. I'd brought some iron bars with me, that would be the base for the steel. I also brought the fine powder that was left after wood was burnt down completely, it was called coke and would be the base for the carbon additive that I would give the iron to make it turn into steel. The quality of steel was made by this fine mixture, depending on what it would be used for, and how fine of steel you wanted in the end. I would use two molds to pour the steel in to. Once I'd formed the basis of the swords, I would then use the forge and my hammer to finish the product. At this point though I at least wanted to get the rough blanks cast tonight.
(22:12:56 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: I look back towards the furnace, seeing that the two thralls were indeed working hard, they knew what they were doing and that was one of the reasons I still rented this forge. I could see that the one thrall was loading wood into the back of the furnace, pulling the coals that were more burnt down towards the front. The other thrall was working the billows, forcing some of the cool air outside, in and over the fire, this would cause the fire to produce an insane amount of heat, enough in fact to make steal malleable, even at that temperature it did not truly melt steel, it could melt iron quite handily though, so it would work to actually make the steel itself. I check that all the other items I need are set up and then I strip off my tunic, and weapons harness. Walking to the wall I take down one of the aprons, sliding the leather strap over my head and then tying it off in the back. I then pull on heavy leather gloves that go up to my elbows.
(22:20:44 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: The temperature in the forge was already rising, the door shut I loved the feel of the heat baking over my skin. I get the trough, it is made of obsidian, a black rock that could in fact be chipped away at to make rudimentary bowls and such out of. In this case a 4 foot long steel rod had been bonded into the end of it, and then the trough itself was perhaps the size of a wooden bowl someone might use for salad on their dinner table. It almost looked like a ladle, with its concave shape and little spout on one end, this would not be used like a ladle though, it would be filed with the iron that had been extracted from iron ore with smelting equipment, and the ash that was used as the carbon base for the mixture of iron and carbon that eventually became steel. I set the three iron bars down into the trough, and then a very very specific amount of ash, I do this by measuring extremely carefully. Too much ash and the steel would be too hard, and would be brittle, too little ash and the finished product will be too much like iron, too soft where the edge does not stay on it.
(22:25:23 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: Once I have the mixture just right I carry the trough over to the furnace and set it into the fires, towards the front where all the coals that have burnt down lay. The two thralls still working hard, forcing air over the coals and keeping the fires stoked. As I get close I can feel the heat rushing out of the fire and over my body, causing beads of sweat to well up on my face and arms. I was also almost immediately covered in soot and ash, as it was being forced out of the fire towards me by the billows. It would take quite some time for this large of a batch to melt down, and all I needed to do was stir it here and there with a long steel rod. I turn back to the workbench and select the molds that I am going to use. One of the weapons would be light, and lightning quick with how light and maneuverable it will be. The other weapon would be big and ponderous, with a heavy hilt and heavy blade. They would make a good pair, depending on the situation. I begin to clamp the molds down to the work benches, with various vice clamps and other apparatuses on the work bench. The molds were in two pieces of course, and had to be clamped together, there was a small hole in one end, where the steel would be poured in to when it was completed.
(22:30:40 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: I would not be doing much that would be considered interesting tonight probably, none but a blacksmith cared about the ratios of carbon to iron to make steel, nor what the actual forging process was of steel, but it was part of the process and I wanted to carry this project through from beginning to end. I pause in clamping down the molds for a moment and walk over to the forge, watching the iron starting to melt down, and mix in with the ash. I use the long steel rod to begin stirring the mixture, though it was going to take some time to become one homogenized liquid. I then go back to finish clamping down the molds, everything was set on the work bench so that I could pour the steel into the molds when it was ready.
(22:36:46 ) [PIC] |. . Exavier Exeter . .| Blacksmith of Minus
-[within a market shop]-
says to ALL: The iron has finally melted down, I have been stirring it continuously for several minutes now, making sure that the ash totally mixes in with the now melted iron, it had to be perfect, it would not do to have a Exeter weapon break on the field of battle, or not hold an edge correctly. I could see that the melting process was finally completed, so I put the steel rod down into a cold water bath, well cool water anyway, and the excess steel flakes off of it. I then grab the iron rod on the end of the trough with both hands, now it would indeed work just like a ladle, with a spout on one side that I could use to pour the steel into the molds. I walk across the few steps between the furnace and the work bench holding the ladle out straight. As I reach the work bench I begin to very carefully pour the molten steel into the first mold, and then the second one. I'd done this many times so I knew just how much steel to make, and just how much to pour in each mold. The heat is baking right out of the ceramic molds, and I fill them to just the right spot. I then turn and dunk he obsidian trough into the water bath, this causes all the steel that was left in the bottom of it to flake off and fall to the bottom of the barrel. I then start to put the other tools away, it would be several hours before I could do the next step anyway. Pulling off the apron and gloves, making sure everything is in its rightful place.

says to --No More than a Beast -: -I don't much care for sailing in ships, but it wasn't as bad as tarns and baskets held a zillion pasangs aloft and swaying on top of all of that. Still, it was the quickest way to get here, thanks to the assistance of my uncle upon the ship's arrival in Victoria. There wasn't time to see him, but on my return to Port Kar perhaps I would stop there, it depended on how long all this business was going to take.-
-My captain assisted me out of the basket, and I waited for the Kajirus to disembark after everyone else and join me. Once I got my own bearings and silently kissed the ground for once more not being smashed into bits upon it, I was eager to leave the hungry eyes of the overgrown vulo and be on my way. The first stop was to the Forge of Exavier, where I would deliver the leather scabbards and the leather slave wear. I glanced to you and pointed to the mountains.- "Those are the Voltai." -I nervously looked around; my visits here had always ended in some sort of disaster, statues flying and shatting on me, all the usual fun stuff.-

says to ALL: -I didn't speak any further, but first nodded to my captain to hand me the large leather sack I had brought with me, that contained the items I had worked on diligently in my workshop in Victoria. Slinging the strap over my shoulder, I turned then and lead the way up the cobblestoned streets until I arrived in the general town square. I had recalled seeing the forge when I had spent considerable time here after Arion had departed. I wondered at times where he might be, and mostly I hoped he was feeding the crows; the paths of life would find their justice and I would have known there had been a reckoning. It mattered not now and I gave a shrug of shoulders. This place hadn't found comfort for me, and I had departed to my villa to sequester myself there.-
-Then ran into Penitent.-
-I glanced back briefly, then scanned the pavillon with dark eyes, locating my target, honing in on it with a sharp gaze. I started forward again until I neared the building that housed the forge. I didn't see Exavier here, but that didn't mean he might be in the back room or something. If he wasn't here, I'd leave the goods for him, then seek some sort of sustenance, maybe a meal. Traveling always exhausted me and whetted my appetite.-

A Member of the Minus is currently... [ In Storyteller Mode ] says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: You would hear that the forge was active today, as it was every day. There were several men who worked the forges here, and there were two furnaces total that ran around the clock. In addition to that the building had been added on to since you were last here. There was now a section that was a showroom of sorts, where slaves could be branded and weapons could be displayed for purchase. The blacksmith Exavier had retrieved some of his old weapons supplies recently so if you were to look through the windows in to the studio you would see all manner of weapons hanging on the walls, there would be racks for branding. Some of them were just crude wooden X's with manacles, some were made to hold a slave in a different position. You may also notice that the back of the building had been built on to as you approach, an office had been installed. Since the owner Exavier often used the office and library in his house to do paperwork, often his second in command Omega Stormreaver would be there taking care of the day to day tasks of the Exeter Metal Works.

says to --No More than a Beast -: -Approaching the forge, I could hear the activity within, so I pulled my cloak a bit tighter and walked to the window, peering inside, yet saw no sign of the man I had done business with. What I did see were things I had seen all too often in my lifetime; being at such a place of business made me feel about as comfortable as finding myself in a restaurant filled with the blue-and-gold-robed caste members. A few of those I had hoped the Priest-Kings would send to a field trip exploring the bottom of Thassa.-
"I don't see him." -I said, turning to you and then I noticed that the building had some sort of extension. I knew you'd follow, so I didn't say anything more, but gripped my skirts and walked along the wall toward that back extension. Some sort of room, it appeared, but upon closer inspection, noticed that it seemed to serve as some sort of office. I noticed the fellow sitting there and gave a knock at the door.- "Is Exavier around? I have something for him that he had asked me to make for him." -It was late, I knew this, but life seemed to have thrown a bunch of stumbling blocks in my path. As usual. I slid the leather sack from my shoulder; it wasn't terribly heavy, so it hadn't given me any sort of ache in my carrying it.-

A Member of the Minus is currently... [ In Storyteller Mode ] says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: The man sitting at the desk almost looks as though he does not belong there. He is relatively slight, five foot 10 and perhaps 160 pounds. He was wiry though, long forked beard and a shaved head. As he walked towards you, you would also see the glint of light against the many gold earrings. If you did not see him in an office of a metal works you would almost think he was a pirate, which of course he was. One that Exavier had found and saved the life of a long time ago, who then went into his employ as the captain of his flagship. The fleet of ships was docked in Brundisium now as they were not much use all the way out here in Minus. They would make periodic trips to the thassa to hunt sea sleen.
"Tal to you, I am Omega Stormreaver, Exavier Exeter, the incredibly humble blacksmith of Minus is my boss. I am sure that I can help you with whatever you might need." He says to you. He is dressed even like a Karian, loose cotton shirt and breeches, the type that would be worn upon a ship.

says to |..Exavier..|Minus: -I stood there, observing the fellow there at the desk, dark panes narrowing. The first thought in my head, was that I had the kajirus with me, as well as three of my men, and I was glad I did. The fellow reminded me of a pirate I once knew, or perhaps, a few I had known. Those of the Vosk had destroyed my family and nearly destroyed my home, and those of Port Kar I had known were equally nasty to deal with. I wasn't particularly pleased to have to deal with such ilk, but if Exavier trusted him. I pursed my lips some, then released a breath of air.- "Tal, to you. I am Ashen Cass-a-vet-tez..." -I said, pronouncing my name slowly; the combination of heritages that formulated my name were often difficult to the ear. I lifted up the sack and held it to the fellow, letting him take it from my grip. Still remaining cautious, I continued speaking.- "Two scabbards as he had requested, and some leather wear for a female slave, as he had ordered. He owes me a single silver for it all..." -I finished, relinquishing the slave wear without cost, seeing that I had delivered the goods so late. For all I knew, he no longer owned the slave, or had a horde of others.-

[ Exavier's Villa ] -Is somewhere within the main villa, the guest villa, or the grounds enclosed by a stone wall...-
says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: Though he dressed the part of a pirate, you would realize almost immediately that he was not one of them any more. Just an affectation he had taken on after leaving Kar all those years ago. His voice was relatively soft and cultured. "ah yes, Ayelen, Exavier has told me quite a bit about you and your work, I have been looking forward to meeting you." He states to you as he leads you inside the small office, your guards pile in as well of course as they did not know Omega nor would trust him. The former pirate hears what you have and takes one of the scabbards out, running his fingertips over it, "ah yes, beautiful work, Exavier mentioned that he wanted me to ask you about a formal arrangement for several types of goods from your shop, if you have indeed set it up." He says to you, pushing some of the various ledgers and books he was working with aside. That would be one thing that would set him out from any pirate you had ever known probably, he was literate and quite intelligent actually. He goes into one of the drawers of the desk and takes out a small leather coin pouch, "Here is your silver for the items, and he asked that I give you another silver, to see if you would be willing to make two axe sheaths. Payment for those now and then another payment when you return with them for the next project?"

says to |..Exavier..|Minus: "Well met then." -I said, noting the articulation of the voice, the mannerisms that were not exactly the typical behavior of a pirate. There was one, however, I remembered well, and he held the same sort of charm and mannerisms. He also forced me to sign a document that to this day still gave me a laugh when I was in a particularly good mood. I followed you inside, turning to my guards; one would remain outside with the Kajirus, my captain and my other man entered with me. The boy had been through a particular horror in his life, and I supposed it was my karma that I attempt to give him a feeling of being safe and cared for, something that had been neglected in my lifetime in all those years. I remained standing while the goods were inspected, feeling rather proud of the work that I had accomplished, taking the first silver in acknowledgment of payment. The other silver, I considered a moment, then spoke.- "I am in the process of establishing a new workshop in Port Kar; I haven't finished it yet..." -I paused to draw a breath; I wasn't sure how long Penitent would allow me this freedom, so I was hesitant to form another business agreement. Then again, my work could be continued despite it all, only the silver going into the lining of the Thief's cloak instead.- "Axe sheaths, eh?" -I said, not really seeing much of the weapon.- "Do you have any drawings or measurements that I can utilize for the work?" -I had planned to go to Victoria, I could make them there.-
(16:45:43 )
A Member of the Minus is currently... [ In Storyteller Mode ] says to .... Ayelen Cassavetes .: The former pirate listens to you and then nods. He reaches to the table and takes out the schematics that he had designed, that was something he had just started working on. The man was highly educated, Exavier was sure that every person that worked for him had a level of education that could make them effective. Considering that Omega effectively ran the largest of Exavier's business operations it would make sense that he would be one of the most highly educated. He shows you the two drawings, both of them for single bladed and spiked back axes. The heads of the axe were about eight inches wide at the head and then tapered down to the point on the other end. "oh, he also asked me to mention the weapons harness that you had discussed with him." He says to you as he makes sure you take the other silver, as Exavier had instructed him to be only fair and above board with you on everything. "And yes, Port Kar, I lived there long ago." He says as if slightly distratcted remembering it. "We do not need to do a long term contract but Exavier did draw one up." He says giving you another scroll, "if you would like to read it over and tell him what you think of it the next time you see him."

I had an old grease stick that I used to hastily make the needed notes, carefully closing the book that it wouldn't smear. Later, I would transpose the notes to another page using the ink and stylus. I nodded from time to time, basically acknowledging what needed to be done with the leather, ensuring that the fit were snug but not overly so. Dark panes shifted as the silver was set in my hand, giving a cant of my head.- "The weapons har----ohhhh, yes, I recall that his is on its last leg." -I gave a smile, a genuine smile that reached my eyes and gave them a small sparkle.- "I'll need some measurements on that as well, or to have a look at his up close to take some notes down." -So it was verified that the fellow was not of the Vosk, but of the Jewel; still once a pirate, I always said, and usually was right about it. I took the scroll in my hand and gave a quizzical look, pursing my lips some, tapping it against my other hand before sliding it into my wallet.- "I'll read it over..." -I said then.- "If you could pass along to him as well, I'm looking to see if he might know of anyone who trains fighting slaves. I don't need to know right away, so if he could think of someone, I'd appreciate it."
